Juniors

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers has taken a keen interest in nurturing our young runners for many years. The club’s juniors include children of all abilities, from those taking their first steps, to those competing in local, regional and national championship races on the fells, and in cross-country including the Mid-Lancashire Cross-Country League and the Red Rose Cross-Country League.

A winner of the Community Club of the Year award, structured training is provided for children of Year 4 and above.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the junior training sessions, or for more information, please contact the junior team manager:

Codes of conduct

The UK Athletics (UKA) and the Home Country Athletics Federations (HCAF) Codes of Conduct set out national standards of conduct for all clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes in the sport. The 2021 revised codes take account of developments in national policy, guidance and practice.

Children and young people have their own codes of conduct and should be clear about their club’s expectations in terms of acceptable behaviour and conduct.

Please refer to the UKA and HCAF Codes of Conduct which includes details about Club Safeguarding plus Codes of Conduct for junior runners, coaches, volunteers, parents and carers.

In accordance with our child protection policy, we will not permit photographs, video or other images of young people to be taken without the consent of the parents/carers and the child.

Join the juniors

To enrol your child with Clayton-le-Moors Harriers please contact the junior team manager, Marion Wilkinson in the first instance. (Tel: 01200 871168)

You will be advised on the best options for your child based on their age and previous running experience. Children who are new to running will be asked to attend the Tuesday training session at Barden Running Track to be assessed. You need to complete a Health & Consent form and don’t forget ‘subs’ are £2.

There is no obligation to join the club initially. All new junior runners begin on a four-week trial period to give them a chance to see if they enjoy it. This also gives us time to assess their commitment and suitability for coached training. And it gives you the opportunity to experience what we do before making any further commitment to the club. After the trial period, we encourage junior runners to join the club. They will then be able to compete in a club vest with their friends.

New runners will be placed in an appropriate ability group which may be at a lower level than expected, for their first session. This allows us to assess their fitness level without overstretching them or discouraging them. We can then decide which ability group is most appropriate for future sessions. This process is based on years of experience with junior runners.

The most common reason for turning new juniors away is their level of maturity. We train next to public roads, often in the dark and we need to be certain that runners will follow our instructions to keep them safe.

• New juniors must be in Year 4 or above and they must have shown a commitment to running such as school cross-country or junior Parkrun.

• All juniors must be signed in and out of every session by a parent or guardian.

All sessions are outdoors and appropriate clothing and footwear is essential. We can give more detailed advice if needed. Please ensure your child has the following:

• Synthetic base layer tops (long sleeve/short sleeve/one or more) to suit the temperature

• Windproof ‘cag’ or top

• Running shoes – not fashion pumps or imitation football boots (Sports Direct usually stock a good selection of suitable junior running shoes.)

• Running shorts or leggings in colder weather

• A hat, or buff and thin gloves will also be needed in colder weather.

• Junior runners should avoid eating a heavy meal before the session. A light snack and a drink, at least 40 minutes before, is ideal.

Training

A variety of training sessions are available for children in Year 4 and above.

Please note: We don’t train junior members of other running clubs. If you would like your child to join Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, you’re welcome to bring them along a couple of times but we would then expect you to change clubs. The exception to this is where the clubs don’t conflict. Although we often train on the track, Clayton-le-Moors Harriers is not affiliated with England Athletics for track-based competition, and we have several members who are also ‘additional first claim’ members of a track-based club.

If your child is attending for the first time, or for more information, please contact the junior team manager: Marion Wilkinson Tel: 01200 871168
